Cryptocurrency prices are trading virtually unchanged Tuesday, extending what’s been a relatively muted start to 2019 for digital assets.
BTCUSD is currently trading at $3,975.00 this Wednesday, In Tuesday trading, a single bitcoin, BTCUSD, +0.58% the best-known cryptocurrency, was fetching $4,029.76, down 0.2% since Monday’s level at 5 p.m. US Eastern Time
Ethereum, the blockchain that most crypto ventures launch their cryptocurrency on, is scheduled for an upgrade on Jan. 16. Unlike the recent debacle with Bitcoin Cash, the ethereum community is in general agreement about the changes to the protocol.
In this upcoming case, the ethereum upgrade has been widely embraced by the community and until now there have been no major players protesting Constantinople (the name of the upgrade). So most likely it will be a smooth upgrade. "This means that the entire network will probably implement the upgrade together and there will be no action required from the end users."
What are altcoins and futures doing
It’s a mixed Tuesday for altcoins the market for cryptocurrencies other than bitcoin. Ether, the cryptocurrency that runs on the ethereum blockchain, was off 0.9% at $148.99, Litecoin LTCUSD, +1.79% was up 2.6% to $38.93, Bitcoin Cash BCHUSD, +0.76% was down 1.2% at $158.30 and XRP, XRPUSD, +0.96% was down 1.2% at 36 cents.
Bitcoin futures finished Tuesday mostly unchanged. The Cboe Global Markets February contract XBTG9, -0.25% ended the session down 0.1% at $3,970, and the CME Group February contract BTCG9, -0.25% finished the day up 0.1% at $3,975.
